Thai comedies stitch up local box office

The romantic comedy-drama E-Tim Tay Nae debuted at No. 1 over the weekened at Major Cineplex, Thailand's biggest multiplex chain.

Stand-up comedian "Nose" Udom Taepanich wrote and stars in E-Tim as a weakling boxer in a Pattaya bar who falls in hopelessly in love with a Japanese tourist (Japanese model Asuka). Released by Sahamongkol Film International, it is directed by Yuthlert Sippapak.

The movie has not fared well critically, with the Bangkok Post's Kong Rithdee writing a negative review (cache), saying: "The disappointment of [this] largely unfunny, shabby comedy ... is a result of both poor scriptwriting and lacklustre gag-spinning by its lead". Though I did laugh on occasion, I didn't really like it either.

Falling from its debut at the top spot to No. 2 is Luang Phee Teng 2 (The Holy Man 2), the sequel to Phranakorn's hit 2005 comedy. Hip-hop star Joey Boy stars as a rapping monk who comes to the aid of rustics in a village plagued by dust from a factory.

The top five at Major Cineplex is rounded out by Ridley Scott's Body of Lies, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe as sparring CIA agents. It debuted over the weekend and was at No. 3 with the digital version of Body of Lies at No. 5 in the Major chain.

The Steven Spielberg-produced thriller Eagle Eye was at No. 4 in its third week of release.

Major Cineplex lists its top five films on its showtimes page, but it does not state any revenue figures or the number of screens for each film.
